Information
The Malaysian pavements come under the jurisdiction of the Public
Works Department (JKR) and the Malaysian Highway Authorities (LLM).
The JKR alone is responsible for about 11,000 km long of road stretches
and the Department spends on average RM400 million every year to maintain
the existing roads and about RM600 million per year on new roads.
Resurfacing the existing roads with rubberized bitumen would drastically
lower the maintenance cost. Furthermore the friction course for new
roads can be constructed with the rubberized bitumen and this will
increase its life cycle and reduce its maintenance cost. Although
there will be an extra initial cost of about 15% this can be recovered
through the reduction in the maintenance and long life cycle costs.
It is estimated that Malaysia production of scrap tires is about 10
million pieces per annum and they are currently being disposed in
an environmentally unfriendly manner - either burnt or buried in designated
areas. The production is expected to increase in the future and the
incorporation of these tires in roads would greatly reduce a potential
environmental disaster in the country |
