Testing
Standard Tests
Routine tests required in Rail Pad specifications are generally not
very sophisticated. For example, BR1213: June 1989 (which has
superseded BR Spec 490 and 491) calls for a set of simple material
tests based on BS 903 methods, plus the following tests on pads:
hardness, compression set, electrical resistance (BS 903 C2)
and quasi-static load-deflection to 250kN.
The requirements in UIC 864-5 O (4th edition, 1986, reprinted 1990)
are similar, except that a dynamic test (5Hz, load range 15 to 90kN)
is called for in the case of cork-elastomer composite pads.
